What Is Spring Cleaning? Why Do We Need To Do It Now?
When it comes to cleaning our homes, understanding what the principals are and what essentially is spring cleaning and why it’s important to tackle this deep clean at least once a year. So, what is spring cleaning?
If you are struggling to work out why you need to spring clean your home or if you are unsure if this is something you even need to do, let me show you the reasons why you need to spring clean and most importantly why you need to do it now.
Let’s Start With The Reasons
Spring cleaning is all about getting into all areas of your home and giving it a good deep clean to make sure that we are getting all the dirt and germs out of our homes.
So, why deep clean? You might be surprised at how much dust and dirt accumulates over a period of time and the idea of spring cleaning is to make sure that we are keeping all areas of our homes clean.
As adults we have to look after the homes that we live in, it might not be our dream home, it might not be perfect, but keeping it clean is part of the process of being an adult.
Now, we don’t have to deep clean our homes weekly, for many this would be too much to do with all the other things we need to do to live. So, creating a schedule where you deep clean your home is a great idea and this is why I’m a fan of spring cleaning.
For me, it means I get into those areas of my home I don’t clean regularly and it also means I’m using this time to check that maintenance isn’t required.

Why During The Spring?
This is the perfect time to refresh your home with the changing season. We are moving from the cold of long winter months to the warmth of spring and summer and there is no way you want to do a spring clean in the summer as it would be too hot.
Summer is also a time for going outside and spending time in the garden. It’s not about deep cleaning our homes.
I will admit that I’m not jumping on the bandwagon on the first day of spring and getting it completed. I like to take my time and consider when I will fit these tasks into my normal daily life. I’m not going to take days off work just to deep clean my home, I don’t have the time to do this.
It’s Spring Cleaning Time
When it comes to spring cleaning the idea is that you go through your whole home and deeply clean all aspects in every room. Not only will you get a clean home you will get a really clean home.
A good spring clean is like giving your home a fresh start to the season and with the longer days of spring it’s the perfect time of year for a deep clean.
The best way to start is by creating a detailed list of each room, what needs cleaning and if you need help moving anything so you can clean behind big items of furniture. By planning in advance it also allows a family member the time they might need to organize their time to help you.

Where To Start The Cleaning
If you have an upstairs in your home, really you should start there as the dust will fall and settle and that would mean your downstairs will get dusty when you tackle the upstairs.
Start with what is high up, so if you have curtains you will need to remove these and wash them, follow the instructions carefully so as not to damage the curtains in any way.
The idea is to work your way down a room and that way the last thing you do, the vacuuming, will have the biggest impact of collecting the dust from the different areas that you have already cleaned.
Remember you have the entire house to clean so don’t start organizing when you are supposed to be cleaning.
Typically Missed Spots
One of the most forgotten items to clean are shower curtains, yet it’s used everyday. Another area are the walls of your home. These surfaces do hold dust and you might be surprised by the amount of dust each wall in your home holds.
The home office is just as important as the living space to deep clean and it’s more than just general cleaning too.
The back of the appliances in the kitchen are also missed, but are just as important to deep clean as it can have an effect on how well the appliance works.
The same for the tops of cabinets, these are often forgotten but they can seriously hold onto a lot of dust and debris that you just don’t want in your home.

Sometimes people have allergies and that’s OK, you might not want to upset your allergies and that’s fine if you can find someone to deal with the dust to prevent seasonal allergies spiking to uncomfortable levels.
