Why Creating A Plan Is Important
I know from experience that planning which isn’t done correctly is a waste of time.
It won’t help you reach your goals, in fact, I think it might make your goals seem further away than ever before.
I have learned the hard way and have found these three tips will help you achieve your goals and put you closer to your dreams.
They require some work, they aren’t magical or happen by themselves, but without them, you might find yourself setting the same goals and dreams for years to come and never get any closer to actually achieve them.
This is why I want to show you how to make the best New Year plans for you.
Why Set Goals In Life
Setting goals helps to motivate you and to push you forward in the right direction and it’s a great tool to use.
But how do you set goals?
You might have heard about the process of picking the right goals using the ‘smart’ method but how do you take these goals and actually achieve them?
The Smart Goal System
The idea behind the ‘smart’ goal setting system is that you take each letter and set goals that follow the rules.
S – specific
M -measurable
A – achievable
R – realistic
T – timed
But even having these concepts to follow many people, me included, can’t fathom out how to actually turn this into reality.
That is until I worked out that you need to do 3 simple things to turn those dreams into reality!
- Learn how to plan effectively
- Create a plan for your goals
- Implement the plan
Yes, it’s that simple but often one or more of these steps are missing and that is what causes even the best plans to fail!
Products To Help You Plan
Planning Effectively
You have to learn how to plan that fits in with how you work, what gets you motivated and moving towards a goal.
All the best plans are no good if they don’t motivate you or move you in the right direction.
That’s why it’s so important to plan your day with including aspects of your goals that you’ve broken down into managable chunks.
It has to be something that you can do and you put that task into your plan for the day.
How To Start To Set Goals
When it comes to setting goals, they have to be things that you want.
You can’t set goals on what other people want you to achieve, they have to come from you, your dreams and desires and not other peoples.
So, to begin with, you have to search your soul, look at your goals and dreams for the life you want to live.
Don’t be afraid to dream big. They are your goals and it’s your life, make your goals count.
Dream Big
Don’t think too short-term, while some goals are great that you can reach quickly, it’s the long-term goals that will have the biggest impact on your life.
I like to set yearly goals, the big ones that I want to reach by this time next year, you can even set 5-year goals.
But remember that a goal doesn’t have to be set in stone and sometimes goals that are this far set into the future can change, be OK with that.
Why You Need To Plan
You must learn to plan; without planning you are not going to work out the time that you have available to do anything.
Planning is the key to success, it can help reduce your stress levels; how many times have you run around looking for something when you are already late.
This makes you stressed and it can even impair your judgement and you might even take more risks than normal. This isn’t good for you or your health.
Planning Reduces Stress
Planning your time properly allows you to ensure that you are ready in time for appointments and that you have plenty of time in advance to prepare.
Without this you will forget things, turn up late and increase the risk of developing stress-related illnesses; it can also affect your work too.
Being late and not being prepared isn’t the best example if you are looking for a promotion or an increase in your wages.
Use the time that you have wisely and learn how to simply plan your week, there is no one system that will work for everyone you have to find what works for you.
Goal Setting Tips
There are no right or wrong answers for this one, some people like time blocks, others like less structure in their plans.
What is important is finding the system that is right for you and you can stick with the system and let it guide you through the day.
For me, I like to have an outline of a plan, something with a little structure but not too defined.
I like wiggle room in my day for all those unexpected interruptions, or when I get the urge to just get up and clean.
I still have tasks that I need to do during the day, I’m just not tied down to the time that I have to get something done.
But if it’s in the plan I will get it done, even if it means working into the night.
Create A Plan For Your Goals
If you are looking to achieve your goals and dreams, the only way forward is to put these into your plans.
How many times have you created New Year resolutions only to find that you break them within hours?
The problem that you have is that you haven’t planned these goals properly, they might be too vague, or you haven’t thought about them enough.
You set the same goal each year with the thought that some point you will actually achieve your dreams, but with very little actual hope of ever getting there.
This is why you need to start thinking about those goals, dreams, and ambitions that you have now.
Creating A Goal You Will Acheive
Start thinking about how you can break down the goal into smaller chunks that are manageable and that you can actually achieve.
You must create a plan for your goals, the same as you need a plan to ensure that you are on track with your life; you need one for your goals too.
I break my goals down roughly into a 12-month plan, but I’m only interested really in a quarter at a time.
Life happens, and I don’t want to waste my time planning for the whole year if after 3 months my plans need to change.
My quarter plans are the detailed ones, the ones that I know I need to focus on and having that knowledge that it’s only 90 days doesn’t make it seem quite as scary.
It’s also so much more managable too.
Simple Time Management Tips
When it comes to implementing your goals the most important action you can take is to actually take action.
Taking the time to think about your goals and setting them into a plan is great, but if you don’t put that plan into action it’s worthless and a waste of time.
You need to take the steps that you have laid out in your plan and actually take the time to do these steps.
Without taking action you will never reach your goals, they will sit there for years to come tormenting you that your dreams are just out of your reach.
Track Your Goals
A great way to ensure that you are making progress is to track your progress.
Keep yourself accountable for your goals and ensure that you are taking steps each week towards those goals.
This will help you focus on what you need to do and not on what you hope to do someday.
Keeping yourself accountable as to your progress every month or week is key to ensuring your plans aren’t going to waste.
Break Your Goals Down
If you want to complete your goals you must break your goals down to tasks that you are able to do weekly towards that goal.
Don’t think your actions will happen towards your goals, plan those actions and take the necessary to achieve your goals.
What Not To Do
Don’t be tempted to hide or to make excuses for failings, look at them objectively and see what you can learn about your own planning, or if there is something else that you need to put into place to help you move forward towards your goals and dreams.
If you see that something isn’t working, you have the time to make adjustments to your plan to get yourself back on track, or, to change the direction of your goals.
Let’s Recap…
Not only do you need to think about your goals and dreams you actually need to start putting things into place to ensure you will achieve your goals.
Break your goals down into manageable tasks that you can do weekly.
It’s time to look forward, start planning the New Year, focus on those dreams and desires that you have and put plans into action so that you can finally reach your dreams.
