Can you get Mold From Condensation On Windows?
The simple answer is yes, we are blocking up our homes to save energy and reduce the running costs of our homes.
But this can have an effect on the amount of moisture inside our homes.
More moisture means that the environment is suitable for the mold spores that are floating around our homes to set up a new home.
Moisture on a hard surface is the perfect place for mold spores to set up a home.

What Causes Condensation Mold?
The increase in moisture in our homes from breathing and even drying washing indoors has to have a place to go.
Often it’s the windows that you notice the condensation more. This damp environment is perfect for mold spores to try and set up a new colony of mold.
Mold spores are in the air, they are so small you can’t see them, however, they are there and what they are doing is looking for the right environment to set up a new home.
How Can You Avoid Condensation On Windows
I think with how our homes are sealed and even with double-glazing windows, there is going to be a time when you see condensation.
If you are not taking the moisture back out of the air then when it hits the cold glass it turns back to water and it can accumulate quickly.
The idea is to keep the moisture levels in the air in your home low.
To do this you need to consider using a dehumidifier, opening windows, or even putting on an extractor fan.
The idea is to pull the moisture back out of the home and get it outside. Here it doesn’t matter if there is water in the air.
How Do You Get Black Mold From Condensation?
Black mold appears on your windows and window frames when the condensation is at its highest.
Often, in the summer months, you won’t see mold in your home, because the air is drier and we don’t tend to dry clothes indoors.
This reduces the amount of moisture in the air and this means that the windows aren’t the right spot for mold as it’s too dry.
So, when the air is damper and holding more moisture and it hits the window and forms condensation, this makes the perfect potential home for spores floating around your home.
Is Condensation Damp?
Your home isn’t damp if there is condensation in your home. Often, condensation forms when there are higher concentrations of moisture in the air.
So, the condensation comes from the air in our homes. If we take no action when we see condensation then this water is going to cause problems, especially if it’s a lot of water.
If we do nothing, not only will you create the perfect environment for mold and lots of it you are potentially going to see this water pool that can run down the wall damaging the flooring and possibly the wall, if left for long periods.
How To Get Rid Of Condensation When It Appears
If you get condensation on your windows then you will need to do a few things to make sure that you have removed it and any potential mold spores that decided to give the window a go for a new home.
You need to dry the window, I like to use my Ecloth window cloth, the waffle one is a great cloth for drying up condensation.
Once you have dried the window sometimes if it’s possible open the window for about ten minutes to circulate drier air in your home.
If the problem is really bad you might want to invest in a dehumidifier, this will remove the excess water from the air in your home and reduce the possibility of getting condensation.
Other Options For Removing Condensation From Windows
There are so many products that you can buy that will help you with condensation on windows.
Here is a list of ideas you can try:
- Dehumidifiers, you can get cheap ones or electric ones
- Cat litter in an old sock on the window sill, this will need changing regularly
- Window vac to dry the window
- Ecloth window cleaning cloth, use the waffle cloth for mopping up water
- A central ventilation system that removes all excess moisture from the home
- A cup of salt on the window sill, again, change regularly
These ideas will either help prevent the condensation from getting worse or to help remove it when it appears.
Condensation happens because our homes are sealed and we are trying to save energy, but breathing, cooking, and drying laundry inside our homes increases the moisture content in the air and it has to go somewhere, often it accumulates on windows as there is a difference in temperature here.
Is Condensation Mold Dangerous?
Any mold in your home is dangerous, it is small but the dangers of mold on our health are bad.
You don’t want to expose yourself to any mold that appears in your home.
When cleaning mold take precautions as this will help protect you from any of the spores getting into your body.
Wear disposable gloves and a face mask, if you are unsure about the mold seek professional help.
Clean the mold with a mixture of tea tree oil and water, and let the mixture sit so it has time to get to work.
Tea tree oil is a natural defense against mold, make sure you have it in your home.
