Declutter The Toys In Your Home
This might seem like a hard chore to do, going through their toys, but always have them with you, and look for broken toys, toys that are too young for them, and things they no longer play with, this is such an important first step.
You can’t organize what you don’t want, well you can, but it’s a complete waste of time.
You don’t have to just trash them all, you can sell them or donate them too and this is a great way to teach our children about giving to others, or learning how to sell items they no longer need.
Both of these options are a great idea to do together as a family.
Getting Rid Of The Toys You Declutter
It’s an important part of decluttering is getting those toys you have decluttered out of your home.
If they are left in your home for too long the chances of them creeping back into your child’s toy boxes increases.
Options to get these items out of your home include:
- Selling on local social media sites
- Giving to a local charity to sell
- Recycle various parts of the toys
- Garage sale
- Trashing toys that are broken
Whatever option you choose don’t let the toys sit in your home for too long, and have a cut-off date for when they need to go.

Categories The Toys After You’ve Decluttered
Before you can organize the toys you have you have to put like items together.
It makes the storage process so much simpler and putting the toys away a lot easier too.
Some of the toy categories you might have include:
This will help you decide on the storage you will need to use for each category.
Sometimes when you put all the toys together in a category you might be surprised how much is there.
You can always reduce the number of toys allowed out at once and swap them over every couple of weeks to give a variety of their toys.
Storage Containers To Choose
When it comes to storage the simpler the better. You really don’t want anything complicated or too fiddly.
This often results in the toys not being put back in the right storage box and this can lead to items being lost or just one big mess.
It depends on the space you have but a toybox without a lid is easier to dump toys in, if you add lids into the equation it can start to get more difficult.
If the lids are too hard to get off, that means you have to help. If the lids are too delicate they can quickly break.
Sometimes lids can even seem to add to the mess as they are left lying around. I found toyboxes with lids were good when the toys were in a communal space like the living room, it meant they could be shut and I didn’t have to see the toys all the time.
Why You Must Label Toy Storage Boxes
If there is no label you won’t know what belongs in that box, but don’t worry I don’t expect young children to be able to read.
You can get simple label makers that really do make this easy, you don’t have to be an artist either.
If you use the Phomemo M220 label maker you can in fact print pictures onto the label.
All you need is the app on your phone and you can even take pictures of the toys themselves and print them on the label.
If the toy boxes are labeled it makes it so much easier to help children learn which toys belong in which box.
This makes tidying up so much easier and a lot less stressful for everybody.
When Toys Aren’t Perfect
The most important thing to remember is that it’s never going to look perfect and that’s OK because it’s life.
You do have to teach children how to put away their toys, they will need help in the beginning, but if it’s something you practice daily with putting toys away it will make the process part of their everyday life.
But toys are there to be played with, they are there to be enjoyed and to learn from, that includes the part where they have to be put away for another day of playing.
Celebrate when they are picked up and stored away, if you don’t praise and reward your child they might not do it again!
