How To Save Money By Cleaning Behind The Fridge
You might think it strange that by cleaning behind your fridge that you can save money, but it is true. By making your fridge work harder it is costing you more money. Keeping the back of your fridge clean can reduce the running costs and save you money; it might even prolong the life of the fridge, too and this is great news for any budget.
Cleaning Behind The Fridge
It is important that you keep the coils of your fridge and freezer clean from dirt. This build-up of dirt and dust will mean that the appliance will work harder and potentially shorten the life and will mean added expense to your budget.
It is relatively simple to keep the backs clean and dust free, it depends how fussy you are to having them clean as to how often you clean behind these appliances. I think for me the maximum time I have left them is a couple of months, and that is because it is a pain to pull them forward and to clean the back.
How To Clean The Coils
I like to use a microfiber cloth to wipe the dirt off and then a quick vacuum ensures that I pick up any loose dust. On my appliances you can see the coils, I think that some appliances they cover these and I would not recommend taking off any cover to clean, unless this is in the warranty booklet that came with the appliance.
If you have a heavy fridge or freezer then it is important that you get help to pull them forward so you have access to clean, there is nothing worse than struggling to do something and then end up hurting yourself in the process.
Other Ways To Save Money On Running Costs
There are other ways you can ensure that you are not costing more money to run your appliances than necessary, never put hot or warm food in the fridge, you will increase the temperature of the fridge and this means that the appliance needs to work harder to reduce the overall temperature.
This is the same principle as leaving the door open for too long, it will increase the internal temperature and this will mean that the appliance will click on to lower the temperature.
Have you considered how much you have in your fridge and freezers? The more items that you have inside the less the running costs will be, there are not empty spaces which need filling up with cold temperatures. If there are items in these spaces, the appliance doesn’t have to work as hard to keep the temperature at a constant level, saving you money.
Your Fridge
There is another reason that you shouldn’t be placing hot items into your fridge, there is the possibility that by raising the temperature inside the fridge you are exposing all the food items to the potential of germs growing and breeding in your food.
This can cause an increase in illness in your home; you might find that you are responsible for a bout of sickness due to a hot item that got placed in your refrigerator.
Therefore, it is not only important that you keep the inside of your appliances clean and germ free. You must also consider the outside of some of these appliances to ensure that you are not making them work harder than they need to, which in turn costs you more money to run and in the long-term shorten the life span of the appliance, again costing you money.
Very good tips – now I’ve got some cleaning to do. Thanks for sharing. Visiting from The Ladies Collective.
Thank you for visiting 🙂
I never think of cleaning the refridge. But I do try to never put hot food in there.
Hot food is the worst for rising the temperature and creating an ideal condition for growing germs and bacteria
