How To Organize Your Linen
If you have struggled to get order in your linen closet, you might not have realized that organization of your linen is simpler than you might imagine.
To iron or not to iron
A few years ago I would have shuddered at the thought of not ironing my linen. It would have not been an unusual thought to pull it all out just to re-iron it all. But, now I have perfected how I organize my linen and I have stopped ironing it, too.
This saves time and stress; if it is folded correctly, it doesn’t need ironing. I have a spread that I put on top of the beds and this means that the covers aren’t on show.
How to organize your linen
The best way to start is to learn to fold items correctly; this will make your linen closet look tidy, and a tidy closet means less work. Instead of separating your linen into pillowcases, duvet cover, start thinking of them working together. This will save you time when looking for a set, you will just be picking up one pile and not disturbing three or four different piles.
Only do a few at a time, because it is surprising how long it can take to sort a linen closet. If you pull all the items out, you can quickly regret the decision and end up shoving it back in and making it look worse.
Once you have collected all the components for a bed you need to fold this into the duvet, the duvet is like the book cover of your bed sets. Then store them on your shelves in order of the beds that they fit, if you have children sets put these separate from the adult bed sets. This system will ensure that if you or your family want to get something from the linen closet, they are not destroying all the piles of linen to get a change of bedding.
If you have young children you can place the bed sets inside the pillowcase and this ensures that you child is able to carry all the bedding without dropping parts on the way from the linen closet to their bedroom.
Folding fitted sheets
For me fitted sheets are perfect, they are great for allowing children to make their own beds, and they are easy to put on a double bed and look good. What isn’t great about them is folding them; they can be difficult to work out how to fold and for them to look good folded.
You need to hold the sheet on the seams and take these and place inside the bottom of the sheet and fold over the edges of the sheet flattening them as you go, then fold the sheet in on itself and this hides the fitted lengths of material on the inside and then fold over again.
Once you have master the fitted sheet, your linen closet will always look neat and tidy. Having a tidy linen closet can speed up the process of getting jobs done; it also makes it easy to find what you are looking for quickly and easily.
