Cleaning The Fridge
If you want your home clean and you take your family’s health seriously then you must consider cleaning your fridge on a regular basis. The old wire fridge shelves were a nightmare to keep clean, but since most fridges have glass shelves now, it has reduced the time it takes to make the inside smell fresh.
It is important that you keep the fridge relatively clean because it can harbour many nasty germs that can quickly spread, causing sickness and diarrhoea to spread through a household.
How to clean your fridge
How you clean, a fridge is a personal experience, own thoughts and feelings on the issue of germs will dictate how often you clean the shelves. For me it is something that I like to complete on a regular basis.
The best time to clean your fridge is before you go shopping; this reduces the amount of items you need to move, as you wouldn’t need to go shopping if your fridge is full of items.
There are different ways to clean. I like to start at the top of the fridge and work my way down. This ensures that any debris that happens to fall will not land on an area I have already cleaned.
The area that I find needs the most attention is where I keep my milk, it always seems to build up quickly with dirt and debris, so I clean this area more frequently than the other areas of the fridge.
It will depend on the products I have to hand as to what I use to clean, often it is just hot soapy water and a clean cloth to dry each shelf as I wipe. I am not fussy on the cleaning products, but if I have used soapy water one week, I try to remember the bleach solution for the next week.
How to stack your fridge
If you are like me then the vegetable drawers at the bottom of the fridge seem to act like hiding places, if an item is in there it is as though it is invisible, no matter how hard I try I can’t seem to remember that I have put food in there. I am even considering moving these from the fridge to increase the amount of storage space available.
You should store your meat in the middle of the fridge because this will be the coolest part, with dairy on the top shelf. Before glass shelves, meat was kept on the bottom shelf; this prevents cross contamination if liquid spills from the meat. However, since glass shelves are replacing open rack shelves, the concerns for meat dripping through the fridge is no longer a problem.
Keeping your fridge clean will enable you to use up food that you have, before it spoils, saving you money and the health of your family, if something isn’t used in the recommended time scale.
Therefore, by cleaning your fridge regularly it can save you money and reduce any health related problems caused by cross contamination or food that has gone off.
