Why You Will Fail At Organizing
I am learning that whilst failure is hard to take and to move forward, it is what makes us stronger people. We understand the hardships, we know how it feels for something to go wrong. We are, therefore, in a better position in future to make better choices and to learn from those mistakes.
15 Reasons Why You Will Fail
It is not so much about the failing, but what we can learn from these problems and issues and how we can work through these to make the task happen and end up with the desired results.
- We are our own worst enemies, it is sometimes easier to put off a task than tackle it head-on. Procrastination is one of the main reasons you will fail at organizing, you might have some great ideas for systems but if you fail to act they will never happen. Take action now, don’t let procrastination win!
- Sometimes the idea of organizing sounds great, it would make your life so much easier, or so you’ve been told. The problem is you just don’t know what to do first. The best solution here is to create a plan, know what you need to do by planning what you need to do and to take it slowly, one project at a time.
- How can you organize if you have never been taught the principles of organization? This might sound silly for some, it is part of what they have always done, however, some people have never learned the principles of organization and you have to start here. You need to learn the basics of organizing, where you learn these skills will depend on you. You can take a class, read books on the subject or even ask a friend, the choice is yours!
- Organizing is going to fail if you rush out and buy loads of storage boxes and baskets without a plan as to what you will need or the system you are trying to sort. Sometimes you will need some supplies but go with a list of what you need, the sizes of the items are important. You might just need to get rid of stuff rather than buying more items to store stuff in!
- If your system is too difficult to keep up its doomed to fail!
- If you are trying to organize with too much stuff it becomes impossible. You need to declutter before you try to organize a space. Have only what you want and need. Being able to let go of items is important, it allows you to organize your home properly.
- You will fail at organizing if you create a system and then never take action to make sure that you put things back in the correct place. Organizing is an ongoing process, it is something you will have to work on every single day to ensure that it will continue to work!
- You must take into account how the space functions that you are looking to organize. How it fits into the overall function of the room, too, is important. If you are trying to organize a drawer in your kitchen, the items that you are trying to organize must make sense to be there, something that you will use in that space.
- I dislike the word ‘zones’ but the idea of having areas for items is important. It is like shoes belong by the front door, toys in the toy room or the bedroom. Clothes in the wardrobe, not all over the house. It is about finding the items in the right zones and teaching family members about where things belong.
- One area we need to consider is ourselves if we don’t want organization in our lives, should it be imposed on us? If you resist the desire for organization, you will never become organized as that is a decision only you can make.
- Do you think being organized costs money? Some people are constantly spending money on products, but you don’t have to spend money to become organized, it is how far you take the concept of organization and what you are looking to achieve. Being organized only costs money if you want it to!
- One reason that organizing will fail is if you don’t teach the other members of your family the systems that you are putting in place. Other people aren’t mind-readers and they can’t just understand a new system without an explanation as what they are to do.
- If you dislike getting rid of things then it becomes difficult to organize, your home is not organized if you have it full to the ceiling with boxes of stuff, even if the boxes have labels and organized. Being organized is having the things that you need and use in your home, each having a home where they belong.
- Creating habits and routines are important, they help us remember to do different tasks around our homes, and without them, it is impossible to keep up without the organizing systems in place. This is when systems crash and don’t recover.
- Labelling is important, it helps you to know where something lives, it gives a permanent place for an item. The idea for labelling isn’t for everyone, they dislike the idea of finding labels on everything and this is OK, create a plan for the area and label the items on the plan, this way you have a master plan for the space always available if it ever needs reorganizing. A great way to do this is with the camera on your phone, you can then add labels to this image, there are free software programs that can help you with this!

Life is about learning to grow and develop and the same is true with organizing. Thank you for being honest about failure. We don’t set out to fail, sometimes we just don’t have a well thought out plan. And then other times that well thought out plans isn’t as planned or simple as we thought, and yet we fail. Of course being human we want to Waller in our self pity that we failed the simple ( so we thought) plan. Then some how we pick ourselves back up and start over. Sometimes we just need to hear it from someone that actually understands and somehow we realize we are not the only one to fail at what we perceive as a simple task. Thank you for putting it out there, I am going to tackle my study/office/sewing room yet again.
Thanks for the encouragement!
You are so welcome Judith, it is part of life and I think the more we accept that sometimes things don’t always go to plan and that it is OK to sometimes fail! Getting back up is so important and often the most difficult part of the process, it is so much easier to accept defeat and never try again! We learn more and achieve more when we fail and have to start again! Thanks for visiting!
