How To Make Your Home Look Like A Show Home?
Honestly, if you want the show home look it might be easier to move out!
Seriously, life happens and having the perfect home isn’t easy and sometimes living is more important.
So, don’t panic if your decoration isn’t up to a show home standard, you and your family have to live there and be happy.
It’s no fun when your children can’t have friends over because you are afraid of the mess, I know I’ve been that parent!
Where To Start To Decorate Your Home
For me, I always know which room in my home I hate the most, this tells me where I need to begin.
I start avoiding the room as much as possible, it might seem weird but it’s the overwhelm of being in that room highlights to me that I need to tackle that space.
This is where I start to decorate my home from, it might not be the most sensible place but if it makes me feel unmotivated and unhappy, I know I need to change things.

How Can I Make My Home Beautiful?
There are a number of ideas floating around the internet on how to refresh your home and I think the first thing you need to do is to declutter.

You have to work out what you want and what you don’t want, this helps you to visualize the room in a new way.
What is great with starting here, if you have anything that is still useful to other people consider selling the item, it could help to pay for the items you need for the refresh later on.

How Do You Tackle The Decluttering?
You can tackle one room at a time with the decluttering and refresh if you declutter every room you might get caught up in this process and forget to move on to the next step.
I have such a short attention span that I really can’t manage massive decluttering sessions they stress me out and I can end up in more of a mess than when I started.
So, I start small, one room at a time, I even break this down into smaller chunks as I don’t want something to look a total mess during the process. I use my Planner Pad for creating projects and breaking things down. It has a project section in the back that you can use for this.
The Messy Middle
Once you have taken the step to get out items that you don’t want, what you are left with are items that you want to keep in that room. Are happy with what’s left?
You might not be totally happy, but you know what you want to work with, and you have ideas going through your mind as to how to improve the space. Use a notebook or the note section on your phone and make notes about what you like and dislike.
It’s all about giving your home some much needed love and attention.
Why I Clean The Room
The next step is always clean, a good deep clean. Not only is there more space in the room to clean but you know what’s in the room is staying and what a better way to feel good about a room than giving it a deep clean.
You will be able to see what you’ve got to work with and see if there is any maintenance that needs doing before you refresh the room completely.
I once moved a wardrobe for a deep clean and found a patch of mold that needed to be dealt with before starting on the room refresh. I wouldn’t have found this until I was deep into the painting and it would have caused a lot of problems.
So, the cleaning helped me discover any issues and gave me time to put a plan into place.

Planning Is Where It Begins
If you want to turn a room in your home into something amazing you really do need a plan.
You can’t hope that things will turn out great if you don’t have a plan.
You need to work out things like budget and what you actually want the room to look like.
A mood board is a great way to see if your ideas go together or if they clash. You can get a better sense for the colour scheme and the accessories by having a plan.
Putting together a mood board is simple, it’s about collecting all the things that you like for that space so that you can play around with colours and furniture to see what works together. A great example of how to put a mood board together comes from Tasha at Kaleidoscope Living.
Remember whilst it would be nice to have a show home look, it’s got to be practical for you and your family to live there. So take your time looking at the practical side of things as well as the aesthetics of the items.
Creating A Budget
You must have a figure in mind on what you can afford to spend, but I would go a little deeper and actually create a budget with your plan.
Look at what the items you are interested in and write down the cost of these items. It will help you see how much it’s going to cost to get the room you’ve picked refreshed.
It also helps to identify if you’ve have picked expensive items that just aren’t in the budget.
Don’t forget to add the money from items that you sold to your available money to spend, unless of course you’ve already spent it.
Looking At Your Budget
Having a budget and a plan helps you tweak the plan to fit your budget.
Remember to include labour in your budget if you are having to get outside help for some aspects of the refresh.
With a budget planned out and a plan on what you are looking for makes shopping so much easier and a lot less stressful.
What You Can Do In A Refresh
There are so many things that can transform a room you will be surprised. Even just adding a bit of colour with a few new cushions will have an impact.
If you are thinking about a full redecoration it’s important to note that if you are renting, it’s a good idea to get permission from the landlord before painting.
Think about the colours that you already have in the room and if any of these items are changing. This will have an impact on the colours you might choose to paint the walls.
Some people choose different colours for different walls, the choice is yours.
Take Your Time
I do like the idea of taking your time with any project, as you know I’m not one for spending hours on one task, I get bored too easily!
However, I still want to make my home look nice on the inside, so I put the time aside to do the tasks necessary.
But sometimes you do need to set aside time to do the work. For example, painting and decorating a room isn’t a five-minute job, especially if you want to make your home look nice on the inside.
So, when you come up with a plan to decorate you must factor in the time to do the task.
It’s a good idea to work out what time you have available and when, put this into your daily plan, sometimes it can be easier to not get around to the things that you need to do, but if you planned for the time it’s easier to tackle the task.
Make Your Home Look Elegant
The finishing touches are the most important aspect of any room refresh; these make or break the room.
You have to get a room finished along with all the little details because it’s those details that make the room.
If you have the little details hanging around it then turns the refresh into something that never gets done and this can have a negative impact on how you feel about the room refresh.
So, keep going until it’s complete.
This is the step that’s going to transform the room and make it complete.
Moving On To The Next Room
Only move on when you have completed the first room. It can get too overwhelming to try and refresh multiple rooms at the same time.
Not only that trying to manage multiple room budgets can become a nightmare just waiting to happen.
You must declutter before you start any room refresh, this is the most important step. You can’t refresh a room if it’s still full of stuff you don’t want and don’t need.
I like to deep clean a room before a refresh because it can highlight any problems you might need to address in the room.
Create a plan and a budget for your room refresh, this will help you work out what you can and can’t afford to do. If there is no real rush to update your home it’s OK to take your time.
Work out a time scale for your update to happen, this keeps everything ticking over and not having a project last years instead of a week or two.
Most importantly start loving your home, giving your home a refresh will make you feel better about the space and you will enjoy being there too.
