How To Feel Better When You Are Depressed
Getting the right medical help is the first thing you should do when feeling depressed; however, there is no magical cure and it isn’t going to get better quickly. If you take medication, it can still take time for that to get into your system and it doesn’t always cure the problem straight away, but it does help. Feeling depressed isn’t easy and you certainly don’t need advice to ‘pull yourself together’ but there are things that I have found which have helped me to get through some of the darker days and they might help you too.
What To Do When You Are Depressed
I am not a doctor or medical expert, but I live through depression every day. Some days I feel great, I think this is the turning point, I have made it past the worst feelings and I can now face the world and move forward. Then the next day I am back feeling low and sad and not having the focus that I need to get the days tasks complete.
It is like a roller coaster and I don’t know what each day will bring, but I do know there are things that can make me feel better or worse and it is knowing these triggers and using the good ones to fight those bad days.
I would be the first person to reach for a chocolate bar to help ease the pain of my day, this is just one reason we don’t buy them! However, what is important is the fact they don’t help how I feel, in fact it makes me feel worse.
I know that I need to eat healthy food and to take exercise, it is the last thing that I want to do but I know that a nice walk with my dog can completely change how I feel, it can give me the energy I need to get through some of the basic tasks of the day.
Even just the task of getting up in the morning and getting dressed is a challenge, but making that push and getting up can help to improve your mood. I know that the process of getting up and moving can make all the difference, I know how easy it is to just sit there and not move and not want to do anything, but I know that once I get started sometimes the tasks are easier to do. I do try to stick to a schedule as this helps to keep me in track with the tasks I need to do. If I have a certain time to do certain task, it helps to motivate me.
Feeling Depressed Is Not Easily Cured
Depression is not easy, it isn’t an illness that you can see yet it can have serious impact on how you feel and how you can live your life. It is not something that you can just brush off or hope will go away. It is something that you have to deal with and make changes and adjustments in your life to accommodate how you feel and to progress slowly forward to feeling better and back in control of your life.
The most important point that anybody must understand is that you are not alone. There are people who you can talk to, either a professional councillor or someone who has been through the same situation.
Therefore, there are things that you can do to help yourself feel better and to help you on the road to recovery. Being depressed is not something that you can get over; one thing I learnt in counselling is that to get better I have to change. I can’t end up in the same position as I was before the illness because that part of me could have contributed to how I felt and in some ways you have to change to get better and I think that, for me, is the most difficult aspect of recovery that I have to deal with. However, as the process continues I do prefer the path I am now taking to where I was before my illness. I am happier than I have been in a long time and I look forward to the day when I can completely put this behind me.
