Fridge Care
Fridge care is vital if you want to make sure that the food that you store in it is going to be protected and last longer than if you didn’t have a fridge. The idea of a fridge is to keep your products at the correct temperature so they last longer.
Food can quickly spoil if it isn’t kept at the correct temperature and this can lead to illness, if the food is consumed when it is past its best. But there is more to protecting the food in your fridge than just assuming that your fridge is going to do all the hard work for you.
Storing the food in the correct containers and on, the correct shelf can help prevent the spread of germs, including salmonella, which, if digested, can kill. It leads to food poisoning, and if this is a severe case, it can kill a person; young children and the elderly are more susceptible to having complications with food poisoning.
Food storage
Raw meat should not be placed on a high shelf, in order to avoid the situation of any liquid escaping, and therefore it isn’t going to drip down onto other food. Making sure that it is adequately covered is also going to protect other food in the fridge.
Hot food should never be placed into the fridge; this will rise the temperature in the fridge and this can increase the chances of introducing germs into the food, which can lead to illness in the person consuming the food.
A fridge is not going to keep food fresh forever, it will depend on the food but it will eventually go off. It is important that you keep your fridge clean, use and remove items before they have a chance to go bad. If an item has been left for too long then it is sometimes safer to throw the item out, rather than risking yours and your families’ health. In future, plan your meals so that you use up any food that is kept in the fridge in a timely manner, saving you money and time.
Cleaning out your fridge
If you regularly clean the inside of your fridge this will allow you to check that out of date food is not being left to rot and potentially leading to the spores contaminating the rest of the food in your fridge.
If you use an antibacterial cleaner on your fridge at least once a week you will be sure that the inside of your fridge is clean, but remember the germs that you are introducing on a regular basis, with the bottles and jars that you introduce into your fridge. It is these that can bring the germs into your fridge and if the temperature rises these are going to be able to breed and this can cause the potential for the introduction of germs. This is why you should never place food directly onto the shelf in the fridge; always put it on or in some sort of container first to prevent it becoming contaminated with germs.
