Creating Storage
Is storage space a problem, do you think that you home isn’t organized because you don’t have enough storage? Maybe you are looking at this the wrong way and you have too many things for the space that you have available. This can cause more problems than just creating more storage solutions.
It is not about going minimalist or not having any personal possessions, it is about getting the right balance for where you are living at this moment. It is difficult when you have children and all their toys spread across the floor. But getting the balance right with the toys as well is important, having too many can mean that a child isn’t playing with the items they have and become bored because they have too many things. Paring down items is difficult but it is essential if you want a more organized home.
Creating storage benefits
If you have a place to put an item when you have finished with it, the item has a home and a place to go. It is then easier to tidy away if you have already found a new home.
It is not about having storage boxes cluttering your home, but finding ways that allows you to contain the items in your home. It can make finding the things that you want easier and it can make your life less stressful by not constantly searching for things.
I am not one for baskets and boxes in every space, there are some organizers that I have watched that seem to think that by putting all the items in boxes and baskets make it easier. This isn’t necessarily true, what it can give you is a cleaning nightmare, have you tried to dust a wicker basket that is on a high shelf? Chances are, after the first attempt you will never bother again. This makes that sort of system useless; you don’t need to shove items in boxes and baskets, you need to find proper homes, if you haven’t enough space chances are you have too many items.
Creating storage is more about finding places in your home to put items, not about buying more storage options. Chances are, when you start to sort items you can quickly realise that you have too many storage containers, because you are starting to understand what the meaning of clutter is.
Clutter is not about rubbish, things that you can just throw away, it is about items that you have in your home that you have kept. They might have been a gift or a bargain, but in truth, you just have no room with which to keep the item. This is when it becomes clutter, it just isn’t adding to your home; it lacks a sense of purpose and understanding when an item has outlived your home, which is when you need to give the item away, sell the item or throw the item in the bin or recycle.
When you realise that creating storage is often about working with the items that you have, instead of creating more; more places to collect clutter and more items to clean.
