How To Break The Clutter, Depression Cycle
If you are wondering what the clutter and depression cycle looks like, I will explain!
It’s hard to do things around your home when you feel depressed!
You want to buy something to cheer yourself up, not necessarily something you need, more likely it’s an impulsive purchase!
These items don’t cheer you up, so you just put it down with the rest of your things!
- You have too many things and it’s too difficult to clean!
- You feel overwhelmed and you start the process again!
You need to break the chain, you need to stop the process of buying more things and tackle the real issue, the depression! It isn’t easy but it is possible!
Hoarding And Depression
It stands to reason, that if you struggle with even doing some of the basics in your life, your home isn’t going to look perfect!
Often, things just build up and you don’t really notice it happening!
Or, you might find that you are spending money on things that you don’t really want, but you feel sad and you think that by spending money it will make you feel better!
It won’t, what it might do is blow your budget and end up in a lot of debt! You will also end up with a lot of stuff that you don’t want either!
I truly believe there is a real link between clutter and depression!
How To Break The Cycle
The first step in breaking the cycle is to admit that you need help!
It’s difficult to tell anyone that you need help, I know I get that, but unfortunately, it is something that you need to do!
You need to seek help, from a professional. Tackling the cause for the clutter is going to help you break that cycle. That cause is the depression that you aren’t seeking help for!
There are many options that will help you with your depression, seek them out and start piecing your life back together!
Depression And Your Messy Home
- Talk to a professional! Your doctor or a counselor!
- Talk to a close friend, tell them how you are feeling.
- Read up on the subject of depression, one workbook that I love is the cognitive behavior workbook
- Know that you are not alone!
Don’t feel overwhelmed by your messy house, it has probably taken a few weeks, if not longer to get to the state it’s in! That means it isn’t going to take a few hours to get it straight!
You need to give yourself time! Only then will you start to make progress with taking back control of your home!
Make a plan and set the timer! This will help you focus on one area at a time! Having a timer means you won’t get overwhelmed if you set it for 5-minute intervals!
I have done this when my depression was at a difficult point, shutting the doors also helped as I could concentrate on one task at a time for just five minutes!
How To Motivate Yourself When Depressed
It isn’t easy to get up and do things around your home when simple tasks like brushing your teeth can seem impossible! Seeking the help you need to address how you feel is important, and remember it is going to take time before you can see the light at the end of the tunnel!
There is no magic cure! Yes, there are medications you can take, but don’t think that as soon as you take them your depression will go away! It is still there, you just don’t feel quite as bad!
Take it slowly, one day at a time!
The clutter makes you feel bad, and this can add to the overwhelming feelings that you have! You don’t have the energy to find a home for the items.
You might not have enough space in your home for things, this is when things really start to pile up and become out of control!
It isn’t a sign to buy more storage, it is time to get rid of the clutter, one item at a time!
Getting rid of stuff is emotionally draining! You have to make decisions that are hard and you have to let stuff go! Don’t feel guilty or sad, it is just a part of life that you need to tackle!
What To Do With The Clutter
It is difficult to know what you need to do with the clutter, you might feel embarrassed that you have let it get so bad that you don’t know where to start!
Start with one thing at a time, separate them into boxes with labels on as to what you want to do!
- Have a donate box
- Trash or rubbish box
- A box for selling
- A keep box
Don’t plan to keep everything, you will just have to let things go! It’s hard but it’s an important step if you want to take control of your home!
If you are still struggling, you might consider hiring an organizer to help you sort through your things and get systems started to help you manage what you have in your home!
Once your home is organized, maybe spending money on a cleaner will help you to keep on top of the work you need to do!
Living With A Clutter Free Home

Therefore, if you are trying to break the clutter, depression cycle, it is possible! You will have to take it slowly but you will get there, one day at a time!

I really enjoyed this article/blog. It was practical, easy to follow, and the suggestions was easy to understand. It was not too wordy or long winded. The subheadings did the job.
I loved it.
