Benefits Of Managing Your Time
You might not realize how much time that you waste, or, at least, don’t use effectively. I am not suggesting that you work constantly, I know and understand how important time away from work is, but if you train yourself to manage your time differently, you might realize how much more you can achieve in less time than before. It is just about changing things around and working smarter and not necessarily harder.
If you are managing your time better, you will have:
- More time to do the things you want
- You will become more organized
- Have the time to spend with your family and friends
- More time doing the things that you want to do
There are different options that will allow you adjust to using time more effectively, but they must all start with some sort of plan.
You need to have time blocked out for appointments; this is not necessarily the most exciting part of planning, but you need to know your commitments before you can start to plan your schedule around these.
If you are one for procrastination, it is possible that this behavior has become a habit rather than something that just happens. Then you find it is an impossible to accomplish because you just haven’t the time you need.
It is about retraining you, take back control of your time and to find the focus in your life; you might find you have more time; the extra time is yours to focus on your dreams and goals.
Planning too much into your day just isn’t going to work, you have a limit to how much you can do in a day and if you try to fit in too much you will find that you have tasks left over which you need to carry forward; this is not something you are looking to do. After all, you need to sleep and if you are up early and then go to bed late, it isn’t doing anything for your health either.
Setting Up A Plan
It is sometimes difficult to know what you need to do each day, interruptions happen and how you deal and plan for these is the most important part of your plan. If you don’t have a time contingency planned into your day, any interruptions could lead to a total disaster. By having half an hour to an hour to cope with those unplanned interruptions means that you do have more control over your time and you can easily use these contingency times if needed.
Always tackle the most important and difficult items first, getting these out-of-the-way means that the difficult tasks are complete and you are not left, trying to do something, which is important just when you want to start thinking about winding down for the day.
My biggest problem is that I am easily distracted, even in the middle of something important and an idea or thought pops into my head; for these distractions I have a notepad and pen, I write these down, this way I don’t have to think about them and I can carry on with my task.
I also know what the end goal is for any task. I have a plan of what I need to complete and I also know until I reach that point other distractions are not permitted, I won’t look at social media or answer my phone; for me this is difficult, however, I am training myself to reward myself and to complete tasks in the time permitted.
Knowing What Needs Doing
You must know what you have to do, you can’t expect your time management skills to improve if you are unaware of the tasks to complete. It is a good idea to list these down, but not too many. Start with those tasks that are the most important, can you break it down further?
This area is something I have found the most difficult, I always thought that I needed to complete the whole task, but if you plan properly you can spread out those important tasks by working them down into smaller chunks and tackling them each day.
Deadlines are important and working with these in mind is a great way to plan properly. Always set time aside for those problems, which arise and always finish on the planned deadline.
Managing your time is not something just for business people; it applies to everyone, filling your day with things that are important to you. For you to reach and achieve your goals is something that you should never give up, no matter your age.
Running a home and bringing up a family is difficult, but the more effective you are at managing your time, creating routines and habits, with more free time you will have to concentrate on those other things that you want to do.
Creating a time management plan and retraining how you see and use your time will be beneficial to your life; having the time to reach your goals and dreams.
