15 Questions You Always Wanted To Know About Abby
I want to introduce you to Abby Lawson from Just A Girl And Her Blog, she is the amazing blogger and organizer who’s has created a living working from home with her husband Donnie supporting her family.
Abby has created courses in the past on blogging for bloggers, and she is just amazing at teaching these, but recently she has created her own organizing course which is aimed at everyday women and mother’s who are looking for a bit more order in their home.
I asked her 15 questions that I know will interest you.
1) What made you create this organizing course?

I am a pretty naturally scatter brained person, but several years ago I started to realize how much organization lowered my stress levels and helped make our home a calmer, more welcoming place to be. I started working to figure out the organizing strategies that would be most effective and changing my habits when it came to organization, and it made a huge difference in our home. I created Impactful Habits, Organized Home to share those strategies and habits with others so that they could create a peaceful, uncluttered home that they love.
2) What was the process like only picking these 6 projects to tackle in the course?
My goal for the course is to teach people a proven process that they can then apply to any area that they need to organize. The projects included in the course– organizing the entry, kitchen, clothing, bathrooms, office, and storage spaces– are the areas where creating solid organizing systems will most help bring order to the rest of the home. I walk through those essential areas step by step, and once students have mastered the process by tackling those spaces, they will then be able to take the skills, processes, and habits they’ve learned and use them on any other area in their home.
3) Would you include anything different if your main audience was for men in an organizing course?
I don’t think so. The organizing process is still the same, no matter who is the one doing the work. Ideally, the everyone in each household would work together on the projects so they develop a sense of ownership and maintain the organizing systems going forward!
4) I know that you state you are a scatterbrain, what is the most recent thing you have forgotten?
I am terrible (TERRIBLE!) at email. I will get so into other projects that I forget to check it for days (or even a week or more– oops!) at a time. Eek!
5) What’s the next course you are thinking about launching?
At some point we would love to do a course about our paperless system for maintaining files. We have a section dedicated to organizing paperwork in Impactful Habits, Organized Home, but it would be fun to dig even deeper into the topic. We don’t have any solid plans or timelines to create a paperless course at this point though!
6) What’s your favourite thing to organize?
I have a special place in my heart for organizing storage spaces like basements, garages, and attics. They can be some of the biggest challenges to organize, but they are also the most rewarding when they’re finished!
Abby has included large spaces to organize in her course: Impactful Habits, Organized Home
7) What is your most important tip before you start organizing?
Sort items by category and declutter first before you go out and buy any bins or storage furniture! It’s tempting to want to do the shopping first (I get it– bins are pretty!), but it’s important to know exactly what we’re working with before we try to come up with a storage solution.
8) Do you like to clean whilst you organize?
Yes– I will sweep up floors or dust/wipe down shelves and cabinets, etc. while I organize. I usually clear everything off of shelves and surfaces when organizing, so it makes it really easy to get them cleaned up at the same time.
9) What’s the worst room in your opinion to organize?
I would say that my kids’ playroom is the toughest. It gets a lot of use, and it seems like my boys’ interests are always changing, so I try to keep adjusting our organizing systems to meet their needs at the time.
Abby has just recently added into the course Impactful Habits, Organized Home a bonus where she shows how she updated her boys playroom, it looks amazing as always!
10) What do you dislike more: an untidy, unorganized room or an unclean, dirty room?
I mean, I dislike both, and I like to organize WAY more than I like to clean. But if something is dirty, it could make the space unhealthy for the inhabitants, so I guess if I could only remove the dirt OR organize, I would remove the dirt so the space was at least safe.
11) Who struggles more in keeping the home organized you or Donnie?
I would say that it just depends on the area. If I would leave for a week, I would come back to mountains of laundry that needed to be done and items would probably be put back in the wrong cabinets or closets because those are the areas I typically handle. If Donnie would leave for a week, he would come back to a sink full of dishes and a pile of paperwork that needed to be processed because those are the areas, he takes care of. We’re a team! 🙂
12) What keeps you motivated?
I have seen how much less stressed I feel and how much more smoothly our family’s life runs when we can all find what we need when we need it and have a cozy, uncluttered home to come to at the end of the day. Creating that safe, stress-free zone for them and for myself is motivation to keep it organized!
13) How many hours a week do you schedule for upkeeping of different areas of your home?
At this point, most of the rooms in our house have solid organizing systems in place, so we’re not doing any major overhauls these days. We do a “weekly reset” once per week where everyone in the family helps straighten up and return anything that’s out of place to its home. That probably takes a half an hour or so. I probably spend 2-3 hours per week on laundry, and Donnie spends a similar amount of time on dishes. Everything else has just become built in to our habits and routines, so we will do a little bit here and there without even thinking about it.
14) I love your home, what’s your favourite room and why?
Thank you! I guess if I had to pick a favourite room it would be my home office. I use it for everything from doing work to crafting to working out to just hanging out and relaxing. It’s like my feminine haven in my house full of boys! 🙂
15) If money were no object would you move and start again?
Not at this point. We love our house and the location of it, and our boys love their school. Plus, I feel like we’ve just now gotten most of our organizing systems and decor in place after living here for 3.5 years, and I’m not ready to start that process all over again yet! We may move when our boys have graduated from high school (which doesn’t happen for another decade!), but we don’t have any plans to relocate before that, even if we did win the lottery, lol.
Let’s Recap…
It’s fun to look into the mind of another person and see how they tick, but when it’s someone you feel you already know it just makes it that much easier to connect.
Abby and her husband, Donnie are the nicest people you can meet, and this is important when it comes to inviting them into your lives, and homes if you consider taking any of their courses.
The course that Abby created Impactful Habits, Organized Home is available all year round and is an amazing course that Abby is continually improving and the access in the Facebook group is amazing.
