Growing Your Own Superfoods
The health of your family is important and some of the food that is the best for you, can sometimes be the most expensive. There is an answer to this, which is to grow your own superfoods. It doesn’t matter the size of your garden as there are varieties that you can grow to fit all spaces. Ideas change about what is a superfood, but you must like the food, too. Growing fruit and vegetables for your family to eat is great and it can also save you money. If you grow more than you can eat fresh, there are ways in which you can keep the goodness for another day and these include freezing or canning the produce.
Superfoods To Grow
- One of the best superfoods, which is also one of the most expensive, is the blueberry. There are many different varieties of the fruit and it is possible that you will find one suitable for the conditions that you will need it to grow. These little berries are full of antioxidants and phytoflavinoids, which protect you and your family by reducing the chances of heart disease and cancer.
- Lingonberries are part of the blueberry family but come from Scandinavia. These berries are tart to eat fresh, working better in jams and jellies.
- If you are a fan of the pumpkin then you are filling your family with some of the best examples of carotenoids, found in the flesh and the seeds of this plant. There are different varieties that you can grow and this can benefit the smaller garden sizes.
- Beetroot is a plant that you either love or hate but it is a great plant for beating off colds, you can eat the leaves as well as the root. For me it is not one of my favourites, though.
- The Chinese Goji berry is a great choice for the garden; the fruits, dried before eating, as they are tart when eaten fresh. The Goji berry has a place in Chinese medicine and is full of vitamin C and E.
- A plant that is necessary in any garden is kale. There are links to this protecting a person from possibility of developing diabetes.
Whilst this list is not exhaustive, it is a guide to where you should look to save money by growing your own superfood. Some plants are more difficult to manage than others, because you have to meet their needs too. However plants like kale are easy to grow and as long as they have the basics, they will thrive.
If you are not looking to turn your garden into a vegetable plot there are things that you can do by incorporating vegetables into your borders, they will grow just as well and add a new dimension to your garden.
Space is not a problem; if your garden is small or you just have minimal space, it is possible to grow your superfoods in pots. In the past I have successfully grown blueberries in containers and they have been very successful. Whatever your outside space, even a windowsill is adequate to grow some superfoods for your family and saving you money too.
