How To Save Money With A Desk Make-Over

My desk wasn’t looking the prettiest, there was nothing wrong with it structurally but the appearance was shabby and badly chipped. I needed to do something drastic, it wasn’t inspiring or even a joy to sit there and work. The problem was that I just couldn’t afford a new desk, they were all out of the price range that I could afford, it needed a desk make-over but I didn’t know how or what to do. A few weeks ago I was at a point where I had to do something, I would find myself looking at other desks and wishing they were mine, but I didn’t know what to do with regards to my desk so the research began.

I knew that because the damage to the outer covering was bad, even if I could find a paint for the desk it just wouldn’t look right, I needed to find a solution that covered up the damage caused by a chair a few years ago.

I never thought after that damage had occurred that there was any hope of saving my desk. The trouble was I like to spread out when I work and this desk fitted my needs, other desks the same size where just too expensive; I was in a rut with my desk. It depressed me to look at the damage, but it is where I spend most of my day working. I just wanted to feel good about my working environment again. I had to find a solution.

I spent several days looking at potential options that I could use and because of the damage to the desk and the fact that it is a chipboard desk, covered in laminate, meant many options that I could have used were out of the question. I couldn’t paint the desk because of the damage, I had to find a solution that would cover up this damage.

The solution that I found was a sticky backed plastic, there were lots of different colours to choose from, the only problem was the top of the desk is quite large and I wanted it covered in one piece. I was lucky that I found a white option that was the perfect size.

However, I didn’t want it the same; I could have something different, I very rarely express my true self but this time I decided that I wanted to stand out. I chose a zebra pattern for the front of my desk and to contrast this I chose a marble effect for the sides.

The Transformation

Unfortunately, I am not very good with this type of transformation, I had to leave this section for my other-half to actually cover my desk, it had to come apart first and this I knew was a slow process, I wasn’t looking forward to the time away from my desk.

As each section came apart, covered and put back together, I hovered like an expectant father waiting for the last piece and awaiting the result.

I knew that this was different from anything I had done in the past and the result is fantastic, I love my new look desk and I love the price that it came to as well. I have a new look desk that every time I look at it I smile; it is a happy place to work and to spend my days.

I am so glad that I didn’t change my desk for a new one, I really don’t think I could love a desk as much as I do this transformation. It has a ‘wow’ factor that I could never have imagined and it has inspired me to do more, to look outside the box, something I would never have even contemplated in the past.
