It is that time of the year again, especially in the UK, where the thought of a bonfire and celebrating bonfire night is quickly approaching. The sudden desire to add a bonfire to the mix, often with a few fireworks too and this can quickly spiral out of control and erupt into something that might require a hospital visit or even calling out the fire brigade. Play It Safe With Bonfires
Don’t get me wrong, a bonfire is a great way to enjoy other people’s company whilst getting the warmth from a fire. It is what signifies that the seasons have changed and that winter is on its way. I can remember visiting bonfires as a child and enjoying the atmosphere and having fun, I can even remember the odd bonfire we at home in my youth; these were more for burning garden rubbish rather than a social gathering, even if they did draw the family together.
Therefore, I am not against bonfires in the least, but I do know that you need to plan these, there are laws that you might have to consider and there are some places that you aren’t legally allowed to have bonfires, because of the fears of pollution.
If you can have a bonfire, you must consider the fires position and the neighbouring structures to where a fire can quickly spread, especially if you are not present to control the fire and the potential danger of it spreading. Make it a safe distance away from your home, and other people’s too; don’t start a bonfire next to a hedge or fence, it is about making the right choices for the fire and eliminating as much of the risks as possible.
While having a bonfire is great, you must consider your neighbours, you don’t want the smoke to go into their house or garden if possible, and they might be worried if you leave the fire unattended for any length of time because of the potential threat to their home, too.
Even after taking all these considerations into account, animals can get into the fire before lighting, thinking that it looks like a nice safe place to sleep. You must inspect a fire before you light it to ensure that no wild animals have moved in and set up home.
Be Safe On Bonfire Night
If you are looking at to having a bonfire, it is important to take the necessary precautions to ensure that your bonfire is as safe as possible.
There are alternatives, many local areas set up local bonfire displays, you might have to pay an entrance fee to cover the costs, but it is often a better display than you could probably afford at home. You don’t have the worry of watching the fire or lighting fireworks, which is the organizers responsibility. Your only task is to take necessary precautions to ensure that you and your family are acting safely.
Therefore, don’t take risks; if you are planning a bonfire and firework display, make sure that you have a plan and minimized the risks involved.
