How To Make A Pen Holder For Your Home

I had an annoying problem in the kitchen; I had nowhere to put a pen. It just sat on top of the shopping list, but the problem was, it never stayed there and it would frequently disappear and a new pen eventually would turn up in its place. I just wanted a penholder for the kitchen but I didn’t know what kind I wanted. Then, on the internet, I started seeing the idea of using nail varnish to decorate different items and I thought it looked cool! I wanted to have a go and believe me I am not an artistic person in the least! However, what to decorate and use was the next problem I needed to solve.

 The Pen Progression

I happened to mention to my daughter what I was thinking and she too has seen the nail varnish items on the internet and expressed an interest in seeing how it worked. This made my heart sing, she is 17 and craft projects with her mum are becoming rare.

I found an empty bicarbonate of soda tub and thought this would make the idea penholder, just what I was looking for.

Now I must stress that even though I had watched loads of videos on the subject I didn’t have high hopes of this first attempt, I didn’t know what it would turn out like. In hindsight, I know that it isn’t the best but being honest that doesn’t really matter, it was a fun project to do and I got to spend some time with my daughter and that was fun.

The Penholder Process

• You need a bowl of warm water
• The nail varnish you want to use
• And a place to put the item when it is drying

The important part that I learned was the best results happen the quicker you are with the dipping on the pot in the warm water, after adding the nail varnish. If you take too long it starts to dry and it goes funny when you dunk the item. The least amount of nail varnish works better than too much in the water, it will mean that it has sat there too long and it doesn’t do the job.

I had hoped that I could use nail varnish remover to write in the nail varnish something simple like ‘pens’, again this didn’t work and I am thinking the nail varnish again was too thick and it made it melt rather than removing it, so I left it.

Has It Worked?

I do have somewhere colourful to put pens and that is great, I even have acquired a few more as spares. Is the pot the picture perfect that I had hoped for and the honest the answer is no. However, it was a fun hour spent with my daughter so this crazy coloured plastic pot already has some fun memories. Will it last, well it will until I have another go but for that I will have to wait until I find another pot to take its place, but at the moment it works and it was a fun thing to do.

Therefore, my take on this craze of covering items with nail varnish, I’m hooked; I actually want to get this process right so that the next time it looks as good as some of the videos that are currently circulating the internet, for now I am happy with my pen holder.
