Choosing Greener Living

Making greener living choices is not about spending more money on loads of fancy products; to me this defeats the object of creating a sustainable green living environment. For me the idea of being green is to use and spend less, to make the most of the items we have and to recycle or to repurpose items, meaning we throw away less and spend less too. It is a choice that many people are considering; they are looking at what they can do to protect the environment in which we live, to ensure that it is able to support life for generations to come.

Greener Living

Greener living is about finding ways so you can live a greener life, it is about making choices, which are good for you as an individual, but also good for the planet on which we live.

Some great ideas for greener living include:

• Recycling items when you have completely finished with them
• Reducing the costs and the energy used when heating your home
• Turn down the temperature of the water you use for washing and general home care
• Grow your own food, this reduces the costs involved in transporting goods to shops, you reduce your own carbon footprint, save money and eat a healthy diet.

Creating A Sustainable Living Plan

Have you considered creating a sustainable living plan, one where you think about what you want in life and how to put these into action. Think about what commitments you can make as a family or an individual, as to how you can focus on actions, which will improve not only your own self-worth but also protecting the precious resources of the planet on which we live.

Some examples you could include in your sustainable living plan:

• Commit to remove electrical plugs from the sockets
• Commit to timed showers to reduce the energy and water used
• Commit to putting on a jumper before turning up the heating
• Commit to recycling rather than filling up landfill sites
• Commit to grow your own food
• Commit to not polluting the environment, cutting your carbon footprint

Growth as an individual is possible; we don’t have to look at greener living as going backwards, it is about developing strategies that allow us to move forward, whilst at the same time considering the impact our actions are having on the environment. It isn’t about giving up on development but thinking about the impact it will have, such as if you are saving up to buy a new car; I am not suggesting that you shouldn’t consider this option, however, you could consider the environmentally friendlier options which are available and are better for the environment.

Greener living is about committing to benefiting yourself as well as the planet on which we live. It is about making choices that can save you money too. I am not suggesting that you should run out and install solar panels, create wind turbines and start raising your own livestock. However, what you should think about is what you do use and if there are ways in which you can reduce the use or find alternatives, which are healthy for the planet but which ultimately fulfil your needs too.

Therefore, for me greener living is about finding the balance where you are using recyclable items, use less energy and save you money long-term. It is about developing strategies that create an environment in which we live together in harmony with the planet, creating a healthier planet for ourselves and all the other animals and plant life that call it home.
