Garden Structure

If you are looking to improve your garden this summer, then it is important to think of the structure of the space you have available. You don’t need a large space, but getting the right areas sorted before you go overboard on the planting, can reduce the amount of work you will need to do.

For me this year, I have wanted to move the shed to a new spot in the garden. A few Laurel bushes have been in for a few years, whilst they had grown and filled up the space; they had also grown outwards and had started to take up more than 6 feet of the garden.

So, I formulated a plan, set out over a number of weeks, on how I could remove these and move the shed to its new home. I knew, to get the shed moved, I had to put in place a schedule of work to prepare the site, whereas before I would have wanted a move without planning the process and often the move never occurred.

This has been an eye-opener for me in the garden and the process is starting to take shape. I have never used this principle before, yet it is something I do with work and inside the home, I am unsure why it has never transferred to the outside space.

What to plan first

I have made an effort to look at the borders of my garden, to ensure the areas close to my new position for the shed are in good shape, and I still want access to all sides giving me the best access to ensure that it is in good order.

But it doesn’t matter what structures you have in the garden or what you want to put there, keeping these buildings maintained is what is going to save you money in the long-term. Not placing a wooden structure directly on the grass is important if you are looking to prolong the life of the base of the shed.

Once I have moved my shed to its new position I am planning to add a new water-butt, this ensures that any rain we have over the winter can be used for watering my plants next year. Saving money and improving the health of the plants, rainwater has less chemicals and is better for the health of your plants.

The garden future

I intend to use this system in the future for planned projects, it allows me to see the time scales I have and it is easier to plan the time into my schedule if I have a definite goal in site.

Therefore, by using a system that I have used in and around my home, I have adjusted it to benefit my garden and me. It is still in its infancy in working out the time scales needed, but the results are very pleasing.
