Organizing Makes Memories
It is possible to organize and make memories; it is not about throwing out everything you love for the sake of organizing your belongings. It is about keeping the items that you have space for and that add to your home.
Keeping every piece of art work that you children produce isn’t going to work; you will find that you have too many and when your children eventually leave home they don’t want all those pieces of paper that you have collected over the years. This is why it is important to keep those memories alive in different ways, without accumulating a mountain of paper.
I kept the special pieces each child has produced. No more than a storage container of items that I consider really special and have kept, not for them but me. One idea that I recently came across was to take pictures of the artwork, you can club together the week’s selection and take just one picture. This gives you the memories and you are able to look back and reminisce on those years.
The special
I like to have items that are really special to me on display, they are the items that I am happy to dust each week; I try not to have too many items on display. If I get bored with items, I pack them away and I will get another small selection back out. This keeps my dusting to a minimum but allows me to have a few alternatives that I can display if I want to.
This makes the memories special, they are just a few special items that I can swap around and this rekindles the memories. It means that my house isn’t filled to the brim with items that need cleaning and can make my home look cluttered.
The not so special
Memory… is the diary that we all carry about with us.
There are times when there are items that aren’t something special and they add to the clutter that is in your home. The items might have been given to you by friends or family and over the years, but it doesn’t mean that you should keep the item forever. If you feel guilty about getting rid of items then you could try putting them into a secure storage box and rotate the items so as to reduce the amount of items that you have out on display.
After a period of 6 months, if you haven’t got the items out then maybe it is time to consider that the items is re-purposed; you can try selling the items, giving them to a charity or even giving them as a gift to someone who may have admired them, in the past.
But sorting through your possessions can bring memories to the forefront of your mind and it is an emotional time. This can slow down the process of sorting through your possessions; giving yourself plenty of time is essential if you are going to make any progress. Time is vital to enable you to organize your memories into appropriate storage, these include reducing the amount that you have on display and the actual amount that you store.
