Garden Border Care
The method of separating your borders from your lawn can vary depending on your budget, gardening desire and what you like. Some garden edging can save time whilst other options can increase the time spent on care. What you want from your garden is individual to the person and their time of life; for me I don’t have to think of children wanting to use the garden and this means my garden pleasures are changing too. Where I used to want as much space possible for the children to play, now is the time for me to make the most of the space for things that I like. I have found this transition in gardening very difficult and it has taken a few years to realise what I want from an outside space and not what others need.
Borders And Plants
I hate weeding and I know the process of having as many plants to fill the space reduces weeds growing, but these cost money. My garden is still going through a change so I am hoping that next year I can concentrate on the plants in the garden and not on the structure.
When planning what plants to buy, ensure you consider the following:
- Climate that you live in and the requirements of the plant
- Soil conditions, some plants thrive in different soils
- The plant position: take this into consideration as to the plant’s needs, if it doesn’t like full sun, then planting here is going to harm the plant if not kill it
- Your attitude to gardening, if you are a keen gardener and can remember to protect plants in certain conditions then this is good. If I have a delicate plant that needs protecting from frost, I remember this fact after the first frost and the plant often dies.
I have changed the edging of my borders this year from the typical gap between the lawn and the border for a wooden edge. It looks good and I am hoping it is going to stop or at least slow down the amount of time it takes for the weeds that are in my lawn to creep into the border and vice versa.
Lawn Care
My lawn is appalling this year, but it has allocated time and money in the budget to completely sort, but again I am reliant on the time and weather factor.
Understanding what you are looking for in a lawn is just as important as keeping on top of its care. I no longer need the high traffic grass, but I am not replacing it, I need to get the weeds out and offer some drainage options so in the bad weather water is able to drain away.
However many jobs to do outside, it is still important that you learn to appreciate your garden too. The seasons seem so short and the years go by too quickly, enjoy your garden and outside space to the fullest.
