I want to express how grateful I am that I decided to go on this journey, it is something that I have put off for too long; it has given me the strength and the courage to move forward in my life and towards my goals and dreams. I never thought, at the beginning of this journey, that I would have progressed so far. I am so grateful for the experiences and the learning that I have undertaken to get where I am today. I am still a long way from reaching my dreams but I know the path I now need to take and the steps to reach the first of many successful goals that I know my future holds.
My Goals Won’t Hold Me Back
For many years I thought I would create goals, something to work towards, but I always failed, I never put into place anything that would allow me to move forward working towards my dreams. It was as if I magically could transfer this dream to reality in the course of the year without doing a thing.
Over these last ten months, I have learnt that I need to plan; I thought I could already do this, unfortunately, I had a lot to learn and I still do. It is about creating realistic goals, ones that are manageable and focused enough that they are achievable.
In addition, you actually have to work towards these goals, they don’t magically happen you actually need to do things to progress towards your goals, you must have feasible plans. I knew this journey would be a tough one, but I didn’t realise how tough. I thought I knew how to plan and progress forward, with having the focus I thought I would succeed with the skills I had. I was very much mistaken, I needed to learn how to plan properly and this is something that has been the biggest learning curve for me, how can a person, addicted to planners have to learn how to plan?
The problem wasn’t the love for the planners, but how to use them effectively and not to fight the process, I did this a lot over the last ten months. However, I am making the progress, I am learning to plan and this is one of the most difficult tasks because people plan differently; it is finding the most suitable planning for you and that is the most difficult task.
You have to try the different sorts; you have to give them a go and to find what works for you and what doesn’t. For me the most important part, I need a paper based system, I need to write using a pen and my planner; it is just something that I find the most comfortable medium for me. However, it doesn’t matter if you prefer electronic, as long as you use it correctly.
However, you have to learn to look back before you can truly plan successfully. How do you know if something works, or if you have completed a task if you don’t look back? You must assess how you work to ensure that you are on the right path for you, without having this knowledge it is very difficult to plan your days effectively.
I am taking the time to look back and to make the necessary adjustments to move forward. I am looking back to the beginning of the year and those goals that I set myself. I am seeing how far I have come in ten months, whilst there are still some goals that I haven’t reached, I now know what I did wrong and how for next year I will change my goals so they are reachable and I will have plans in place to help take me towards those goals and beyond.
I just can’t believe how grateful I am that I decided to start this journey, without this constant assessment of how I am doing I would have wasted another year and set the same goals again, obviously hoping that something would happen for me to achieve my goals. Instead, I have learnt the most important lesson, which is, I have to plan my goals, they will be achievable and I have to work towards them every single week.
Therefore, for this coming month, I am still working on looking back to see what has worked and what I still need to address to head in the right direction. One of the tasks that I have set myself is to start thinking about my goals for next year; I want to give myself enough time to plan them properly and to have doable tasks that will allow me to work towards my dreams.
