Making A New Frame To Me From An Old One

I just don’t like throwing things away if I can help it and the same is true when people give me things. I have a pile of picture frames that my mum sent me, they’re dated, the pictures past their best but there is nothing wrong with the frames, but they just didn’t fit anywhere in my home. I knew I wanted some artwork above the coat rack that I recently finished sorting for summer. However, the colour of the frame was just too dark.

The Solution To Making The Frame Work

There was nothing wrong with the frame, and I knew that if I sprayed it a colour in keeping with the area it would fit the space. I choose silver to highlight the shoe rack that was previously painted.

• I removed the backing and the insides of the frame, the tacks holding the back in place, came off easily.
• I placed the frame on newspaper and sprayed it with paint.
• I was unsure of the frame for the picture, it was brown in colour and just didn’t go, unfortunately I didn’t have any card to make the frame myself so I chose to paint this as well. I didn’t want it too silver, I wanted some of the colour to peak through; so the covering on this item was not as even, I wanted that hint of the brown to poke through.

While the paint dried I wanted to find the right wording to put on the inside, I wanted it inspirational, something that would make me think as I read it each time I come down the stairs.

I wanted it inspirational to my family, to make them think about the choices they make every day.

For this activity my family talked and discussed the wording, we wanted something that would push us and motivate us as a group, but to also speak to us as individuals too.

The wording chosen, typed and printed and fit perfectly inside the frame.

Putting The Frame Together

I don’t know why but I didn’t want the glass in the frame it just didn’t have the right feel with the glass in, so I left it out. My husband had to nail the tacks in to hold the frame, I am just no good with a hammer you could probably describe me as a danger to myself with a hammer in hand and probably anyone else in the vicinity!

This picture frame got rested on the hooks above the coat rail, I didn’t want it attached to the wall, I wanted a relaxed and easy positioning of the frame, nothing formal and I love it.

It has meant that out of the pile of picture frames waiting for their turn, there is one less to look after and clean, it has found its current new home and I am so pleased. I didn’t know what to do with these frames and I am so happy that I had the courage to try something new. There are still a few left and maybe in the future they too will find their new home with maybe a few modifications.

Therefore, I feel a new sense of purpose with my home, at last I have found some creativity inside that’s been hiding too long and now I am letting it go free and it feels awesome.
