Do you want to plan your goals so that you are in a position to start living your dreams? Unfortunately, it will take slightly more than a quick note scribbled on the back of a paper napkin that you found stuffed in your pocket after the New Year’s party. Those goals and dreams that you want and desire can only come true if you plan to meet your goals and your targets throughout the year. Goals don’t suddenly appear complete without hard work and determination on your part.
Plan Your Goals
I have read an awful amount of books and articles on planning, I thought I knew how to plan, in truth I just about knew the basics, there is so much to learn and last year I put myself through this learning curve because I wanted to plan my goals and start living my dreams. This year I want to test my theory so I can help you plan your goals in the future!
The problem I came across repeatedly resulted in the most basic explanation and a quick paragraph or two and that was all the hand-holding I got.
I wanted more; I wanted the details, the guts of the process, put across to me in a way, which allowed me to follow the process, as well as producing results to achieve my goals.
The problem I found was there is very limited information into the precise system or systems on how to make things work. I wanted to know how to make my plans detailed enough so I could follow them and reach my goals.
Maybe the ones that were there just didn’t follow the mental process that my brain needs, no one thinks the same and so planning is a difficult process and you have to find the right system for you. The trouble I had, I just couldn’t find one that meets my needs, flexible and has to help me focus and it needed to work!
The good news is I have come up with a way that I think will work, but I need to test that theory. Therefore, this year for me is testing how things work, how I make my plans into reality and I start living my dream.
Once I have tested areas, I will compile a book that will teach you my techniques for planning, implementing them and start living your own dreams and desires.
Each month I will share with you, my successes and failures; you will see glimpses of the system that I am putting together, you will see me putting what works into my daily life and binning those concepts that just don’t work!
You can go through this process with me, follow along and you can give me insights into what works for you.
The Planning Process
Have you ever heard someone tell you the secret of living your dreams and planning is to set goals, break these down and there you have it you are living your dreams. To me yes, I get the big picture, I can dream as big as the next person can, but how do you break it down? What are manageable chunks? What is that middle bit that always seem so vague and unreal?
That middle bit has made achieving my goals the most challenging part, it is allusive, or I am just not getting what those other people are telling me. Maybe it’s me or I am totally clueless of what they really mean!
The easy part is the dreaming big, what do you want to achieve by next year? Anything you want but you must make them realistic, you might want to win the lottery but that is not a dream that you can actually work towards, that is just luck of the draw.
Some examples of big dreams:
- To earn X amount of money
- To lose X amount of weight
- To start your own business
These big dreams are possible; they can work, you need to feel them too. It is important they are your dreams and goals, something you want to achieve; this will give you the drive and determination to want to succeed.
What To Do Next And How To Plan Your Goals
An area that I have struggled with so much. How do you break something down and then how do you achieve your goals? It seems an impossible task and a never-ending task, you could spend hours breaking something down and then wonder, is it right?
How do you know what you should break down, and the ideal way to accomplish this task?
I have found that I needed more than just a yearly goal and to break this down into 12 monthly parts, this is why I am moving towards quarterly goals. Therefore, instead of breaking something into 12, I am breaking it down into quarters; then, I am not looking at all the quarters I am focusing on the first 3-month period, the rest of the year I will look at again when I reach the end of my first quarter.
This method makes the bigger picture not so big and this is important, you aren’t as scared of this quarter target but challenged by the goals.
For me each month I have a goal board, this spurs me on to reach my targets but it is not where I break down the goal into smaller manageable tasks. This is where the hard work really starts! It is time to plan your goals!
Plan Your Goals
I will show you my main goal for this year and how I have broken it down for the quarter.
- To increase my readership by 30%, this is scary, but I know it is something that I can achieve.
- Where last year my quarterly goal for readership was 90,000, my new quarterly target is 109,489, a scary big number but one that I want to achieve.
Therefore, I now know my quarterly target and I can break this down into monthly goals too. However, just knowing this number doesn’t put me closer to my goal. However, what it does allow me to see is a target, something to aim for and this is where I need to make the plans to reach that target.
I know what areas of writing a blog, the background parts as well as the actual blog the reader sees, that can have a positive impact on the views each day. Therefore, I have a set of tasks, which I need to check off monthly to ensure I am achieving these and increasing the chances of people seeing what I write, enjoy the information and come back regularly.
- Great content with great images is the most important aspect, without this there is nothing for you, the readers, to read.
- Sharing on social media, this is great for reaching people.
- To give you, the readers, free items that make’s the content even better.
- I need to keep my readers, you, on the site longer so I want you to find related articles.
- Writing guest posts where I can take my writing to a different audience so this new audience finds my site and me.
- Long-term projects where I am able to create something special for my reader.
The trouble I have had before was thinking the above list of my plans could take me further towards my goals. However, they are too vague, I need to break them down further.
Therefore, taking the first item on the list, I know that I need great content and images. However, there is so much more to this than sitting down and writing what pops into my head.
I use an editorial calendar to ensure that I am aware of the articles I need to write and what topic. This process is not as easy as it sounds and I know that I have to spend the time in this area to ensure that great content’s planned, having adequate time each week to work on this is important. I know that I need to schedule the time to work on my editorial calendar and I know this is just one section that will bring readers to my site.
However, I can’t just schedule editorial calendar work, I need to define this further, I need to know before I sit down to work on this one area, what I am working on. Each month I am going through the areas of focus to increase readership and breaking down areas that will encompass the whole project over the course of the month, but breaking these down to the basic tasks will make the project by the end of the month.
How You Can Take This Information
By showing you how to break down a big goal, to find those smaller chunks from a bigger project will help you see what you need to do.
If for example you wanted to lose weight you need to set your quarterly target, divide this number into 3 to get your monthly target you need to lose. However, what you have just achieved is only the beginning of the task. You know the principals of losing weight and you have to work out how you are going to achieve the weight loss.
Exercise and eating fewer calories is your main focus, but you must work out how you are going to do this goal and the steps you are going to take to get there. If you struggle with will power, then one of the steps you need to put into place is how you will ensure that your willpower is kept in check.
Don’t let any area of your weight loss journey go unplanned, this is where you will falter and feel that your journey has been lost. Remember to plan your goals!
Know there are times when challenges will jump in your path, having plans on how to get back on track is important. Which is why you must have planning meetings with yourself as a minimum each week.
Therefore, if you are struggling with your New Year’s resolutions already or have yet to set them, it is possible to bring your goals into focus and make plans that you can follow to help you reach your goals and start living your dreams. If you don’t plan your goals you will not reach them!
