I have struggled the last few weeks with food boredom. I typically planned my menu a week in advance, but with time constraints and not knowing what to do, each week had a similar feel, with nothing new and stimulating to try. Therefore, I have decided to change the way I plan meals; I am going back to planning them for the entire month. I only stopped this about three months ago because of time constraints and lack of inspiration. But I am determined to go back to this method of meal planning because I was able to see the entire month and duplication of meals was maxed at twice per month.
I have noticed that when I am bored with the food that I eat; I eat more, this hasn’t helped my waistline and I need to address it now.
Plan meals chart
There are plenty of charts and tables available free on the internet that allows you to plan meals. I am not one for planning all the meals during the day, but this is my preference, it is possible to plan all meals including snacks for the entire month.
If I see a recipe that I would like to try, I am printing them off and storing them in my menu plan file, this is just a hanging file that I keep in my filing cabinet and is part of my home maintenance section. It is in a place that works for me; some people like to have these stored together in a binder, I just found it didn’t work that way for me. When I put together my meal plan for the month I can pull out the recipes that I want to try, and then I spread them out throughout the month, giving me variety in my diet and reducing the feeling of being food bored.
I also keep the older sheets in the file for inspiration for the coming months. If I am struggling to find a meal to fit, inspiration often hits from looking back at the meals that I have made in the past. I am not cooking the same meal more than twice in a month, giving me the variety that I crave.
If there are leftovers that can’t be frozen, then I use these up at lunch times in sandwiches or different ways such as soups, to avoid me becoming lunchtime food bored, too.
Shopping for the monthly plan
It is possible to manage your shopping even if you plan for the month. You are able to create a shopping list that enables you to enjoy a variety of food. If you are unable to purchase an item, it does give you the option to change a meal; it is important to remember that if you plan meals, the menu is not set in stone.
Planning a variety in your diet is a great way to change the way you eat and think about food. For me I am hoping that having the variety in my diet will increase the pleasure that I get from food and cut down the cravings for unhealthy food, and therefore helping me to lose weight.
